As proud UTEP alumni and founders of The Jazz Exchange, Abel and I spent over a decade immersed in the vibrant jazz scenes of New York and New Jersey. It was there that we deepened our passion for jazz, developed our careers, and saw firsthand how access to arts education can uplift both individuals and entire communities. But no matter where our journey took us, our hearts always remained rooted in El Paso.

When we returned home, we saw a unique opportunity to give back to the community that had supported us from the start. That’s why we created The Jazz Exchange—to inspire and empower the next generation of musicians and to carve out more spaces for live jazz to thrive right here in El Paso. We believe every young person should have the opportunity to pursue their musical dreams, and every local talent deserves a platform to shine, regardless of background.

Through our programs, we are not just teaching jazz; we are instilling confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Music does more than foster performance skills—it promotes empathy, sharpens cognitive thinking, and creates a sense of family where everyone feels welcome and part of something much bigger than just the music itself. As legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker once said, “Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn.” Our students are learning to live through their music, expressing themselves, and becoming part of a vibrant, supportive community. Our events bring young and experienced musicians together on the same stage—because that is where the real learning happens, in the shared language of jazz. By partnering with local venues, we are creating spaces where both local and visiting musicians can collaborate, create magic, and inspire one another.
