On October 15th, our community will come together for El Paso Giving Day, and I’m asking my friends, family, colleagues, and professional network to consider supporting a cause that has shaped my life from childhood through today.
Long before I became Board Chair of the YMCA, I was a YMCA kid.
I spent my summers in YMCA day camps, my afternoons in after-school programs, and countless hours on youth sports teams coached by my dad. The Y gave me a safe place to learn, grow, compete, make friends, and build confidence. Those experiences left a lasting mark on me.
Years later, my own children had many of those same opportunities through YMCA youth sports. In fact, many of the current friendships my family values most began on a YMCA sideline.
What makes the YMCA special is that it is so much more than a gym or sports league. Every day, the Y invests in young people through camps, childcare, after-school programs, swim lessons, mentoring, and youth development opportunities. It promotes healthy living for individuals, seniors and families of all ages, and it works to ensure that financial circumstances never prevent a family from participating. The YMCA brings people together, strengthens neighborhoods, and creates a sense of belonging that is increasingly rare in today’s world.
I’ve seen firsthand the impact the YMCA has on children, families, and the El Paso community. I’ve also seen the difference that a caring coach, mentor, volunteer, or program can make in a young person’s life.
