In 2020, I began visiting the Humane Society of El Paso, hoping to find my new best friend. On February 7th, I met Honey, a tiny, trembling puppy curled in the corner of her kennel, too scared to move or be touched. The moment our eyes met, I felt something I can only describe as heaven sent. Outside in the cold, she stayed frozen with fear, so I took off my jacket and placed it on the ground to keep her warm. She didn’t move, but when she looked at me, I knew she was going to be my best friend.

With the encouragement of the Humane Society staff, I adopted her that day. On the ride home, Honey burrowed into my jacket, shaking but safe, and I promised her she would never have to be afraid again. Those first few days were quiet and tender. Every small step she took toward trust felt like a miracle. Soon she began to explore, discovering her bed, her toys, and the safety of being loved.

When she turned one, we began meeting with a professional trainer, and Hoeny bloomed before my eyes. During the pandemic, she went everywhere with me, to the park, on hikes, through drive-thrus, and on long road trips. She became my shadow, my comfort, and my joy. Nearly six years later, Honey has helped raise our other dogs and has become the heart of our little family. The scared puppy who once hid in a corner now shines with confidence, loyalty, and love.
