Hello friends, My name is Angie Maldonado, and I am here to share my family’s success story. We had to go through a tough and long process to be where we are today due to us not being originally from the U.S. We couldn’t have done it without the support from our amazing church community and our loved ones. Our story starts around 12 years ago, my mom was a legal resident of the U.S and went through the process of becoming a citizen. After long nights of repeatedly studying almost 100 history questions and practicing speaking English she passed her oral and written test. I remember she was scared and worried she wouldn’t pass it, because English wasn’t her first language and she didn’t know much of the U.S history, and at times I would sit with her and go over some questions finding ways to make her memorize them. The memory of that test day is kind of faded, but I remember it was during a school day the intercom goes off and the principal asks the school to have a moment of prayer for my mom because she was about to take that test. We were all anxious to know the results and afterschool when my mom arrived to pick us up, she told us the news. There was a lot of people that celebrated that special moment with us. The next step she accomplished was filing citizenship for me and my sister, and residency for my dad that’s where things got complicated. During the appointment for us to find out where our case was, we got the news that my dad didn’t qualify to be a resident due to “his charges.” There was some sort of mess up because my dad wasn’t the person they were saying he was. He had to fight his case and prove that his name was not tided to those charges that for some reason he had been charged for. During the pandemic my grandparents (from my dad’s side) unfortunately passed away and it was tough specially for my dad not to be able to be close to his sibling during a time like that and because of his case still being in process he wasn’t allowed to go over. As much as we were hopeful for his case to be in our favor, with our frustration of waiting around for too long just made us think the worst-case scenario (him being deported.) Yet wasn’t how the story ended, after 10 years of waiting, we found out his letter of acceptance had been sent out. OH! When we found out we started bawling our eyes out. They do say that after a big storm there is a rainbow, and this was it for us and I am so grateful for it. Just like my family’s situation there’s is people that are going through the process of immigration as well. This is an opportunity to help raise money into these organizations, so people can have the opportunity to receive services like the ones that were provided to my family. Hola Amigos, Mi nombre es Angie Maldonado, y estoy aquí para contarles la exitosa historia de mi familia. Tuvimos que pasar por un proceso largo y duro para poder estar en donde estamos ahorita debido a que nosotros no somos originalmente de los Estados Unidos. No podríamos haberlo echo si no fuera por el apoyo de nuestra comunidad de la iglesia y por nuestros seres queridos. Nuestra historia empieza desde hace ya 12 años, mi mamá era residente de los E.E.U.U y luego fue por el proceso para hacerse ciudadana. Después de largas noches estudiando repetitivamente casi 100 preguntas de historia, y practicando hablar el Ingles ella paso el examen oral y escrito. Me acuerdo que mi mamá tenia miedo y estaba muy preocupada que no fuera pasar ese examen ya que Ingles no fue su primer lenguaje y no sabia mucho de la historia de los E.E.U.U, y me acuerdo de que a veces me la pasaba con ella repasando las preguntas y darle formas para que le ayudaran a memorizarse las respuestas. La memoria del día del examen no esta tan clara en mi mente, pero solo recuerdo que era un día escolar y por intercomunicador la directora pide que hagamos todos una oración por mi mamá porque estaba por tomar su examen. Todos estábamos ya con ansias de saber el resultado, y después de escuela cuando mi mamá llego a recogernos nos dijo la noticia. Hubo mucha gente hay que celebro ese momento especial con nosotros. El siguiente paso que mi mamá logro fue aplicar para la ciudadanía para mi y mi hermana, y residencia para mi papá y fue ahí donde se complicaron las cosas. Durante la cita para saber como se encontraba nuestro caso, nos dieron la noticia que mi papá no calificaba para ser residente por “sus cargos.” Hay ya había un error porque mi papá no era la persona cual ellos decían que era. Mi papá peleo su caso para probar que su nombre no tenía nada de conexión con los cargos presentados. Durante la pandemia desafortunadamente perdimos a mis abuelos paternos y fue una situación muy difícil, especialmente para mi papá ya que no podía cruzar a Juárez porque su caso aun estaba en proceso. Por mucho que teníamos la esperanza que el caso diera a nuestro favor de la desesperación de no poder hacer nada nos hizo pensar lo peor de lo peor (que iba a ser deportado.) Pero así no fue como termino nuestra historia, después de 10 años nos dimos cuenta de que su carta de aprobación ya estaba enviada. ¡OH! Cuando nos dimos cuenta empezamos todos a llorar. Bien dices que después de una gran tormenta hay un arcoíris y este para nosotros fue justo eso, y estoy muy agradecida. Así como mi familia paso por esa situación hay familias que también están pasando por este proceso migratorio. Esta es una oportunidad de ayudar a organizaciones para que las personas puedan tener acceso a los servicios que ayudaron a mi familia.
