I was born and raised in El Paso.

Loretto Academy provided me with early engagement with Catholic social and moral teaching from elementary through high school. Service learning, an integral part of the curriculum, taught responsibility and collaboration, and brought us together as a community.

I’ve been on the ground as a Fulbright child in Central America (at the age of 5 I urged my parents to let me spend the night with our Nicaraguan housekeeper and experienced her one room house with dirt floors).

I grew up on a vibrant and dynamic border that faces the challenges and opportunities of immigration, and the repercussions of poverty and inequity daily.

And I’m the daughter of a Chilean immigrant with a passion for working with diverse groups of people.

What I love about living on the Texas Mexico border is that I don’t have to choose a side – we belong to both sides.

As a Catholic, Latina, the daughter of an immigrant, and a child of the border, I’m honored to serve on the board of the Hope Border Institute.

The Hope Border Institute (HOPE) brings the perspective of Catholic social teaching to bear on the realities unique to our US-Mexico border region. Through a robust program of research and policy work, leadership development and action, we work to build justice and deepen solidarity across the borderlands.
