Abara means “ford” in a number of semitic languages, signifying a natural place where a river is shallow enough to cross. Our desire is to cultivate a space where people move in humility across divides.
In response to global migration in a polarizing world: Abara inspires connections across divides in pursuit of narrative, systems, and personal change. We envision a global beloved community flourishing through justice, peace, healing, and transformation.

Abara is honored to participate in the seventh year of El Paso Giving Day, which is today! #ElPasoGivingDay, as the hashtag suggests, is quite straightforward: it’s a day of charitable giving to nonprofits just like us, all of which are solely located in the greater El Paso area. For Abara, it’s a day of generosity, of excitement, and of dreaming big dreams, as we continue to stand in solidarity with those along migrant pathways.
Our goal is to raise $12,000, all of which will directly support migrant shelters on both sides of the Rio Grande, sustain a few of Abara’s everyday expenses, and close the gap on the much-needed purchase of a passenger van.
Abara Shelter Connectors regularly meet with migrant shelters in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez to assess needs and connect with resources. Donations to Abara help support these migrant shelters on both sides of the Rio Grande with essential food and supplies such as hygiene products, formula, diapers, and clothing.
Our ask to those of you who visit this page is simple: wherever you reside, would you consider standing with Abara and our neighbors as we work toward reaching our goal of $12,000?
Your gift whether small or large has an immediate impact on both sides of the border, so from our hearts to yours, we thank you for sharing, for giving, and for participating along with us. If you have any questions, simply reply to email@example.com
PS - Abara’s Capital Campaign is underway to raise funds to complete the purchase and restore the beautiful Historic Hacienda and surrounding 4-acre site. Learn more about this future Borderland Center at AbaraHouse.org
