Causes: Education, Health and Wellness, Poverty and Hunger
The GECU Foundation embraces the credit union’s people helping people philosophy by assisting charitable causes that enrich the El Paso community and improve the lives of the people that live in it. For El Paso Giving Day this year, we partnered with The United Way of El Paso County to support their work in our community.
The United Way of El Paso County works to help provide basic needs to families and increase financial stability in our community. By working together, the GECU Foundation and United Way of El Paso can help decrease poverty in the community by increasing financial literacy, supporting job training that leads to jobs that offer livable wages, and more! The United Way of El Paso County is also developing an initiative that ensures that the family’s head of household has access to opportunities that help him or her gain job certifications, GEDs, social services, and other needs.
Currently, about 21% of El Pasoans live in poverty and 33% are one emergency away from falling into poverty. 65% of local households claimed to have been highly or moderately affected by the pandemic. This can put the health and education of El Pasoans of all ages in jeopardy. Now more than ever, ALICE families — asset limited, income constrained and employed — are suffering and are forced to make difficult choices or face serious consequences. Be a part of the movement and help us make an impact.
