Causes: Children and Youth, Education
At Jefferson-Silva, student musicians can focus on their craft, thanks to a remarkable group of volunteers known as the Band Boosters. These are not your average volunteers. No, these are fundraising warriors, concession stand champions, and logistical magicians who somehow juggle full-time jobs, disabilities, and military service to make sure the band keeps marching on. You’ll find them at UTEP football games making hot dogs, counting change, and trying to remember which Gatorade flavor stains the least when spilled on a band uniform. The money they raise through sweat, snacks, and sheer determination goes straight to the students. It funds everything from props that transform halftime shows into Broadway-level spectacles to competition fees and those much-needed meals that fuel hungry musicians who’ve been rehearsing since sunrise. Jefferson-Silva is not a wealthy school. It’s a place where every dollar counts twice and every victory means even more. But Silva, the medical magnet half of the partnership, is where the future of healthcare begins. These are students who may one day become the nurses, doctors, and researchers who heal the world. For now, though, they march alongside their Jefferson peers, creating the rhythm and heart of a very proud community. Behind it all, the Band Boosters keep things humming. They don’t do it for recognition or applause (though a standing ovation wouldn’t hurt). They do it because they believe in these students, their talent, their drive, and their right to shine, no matter the zip code. So the next time you hear the Jefferson/Silva band play, those drums pounding, horns soaring, and flags twirling, remember: it’s not just music. It’s the sound of a community fueled by hot dogs, hard work, and heart.
