Causes: Children and Youth, Education, Social Justice
Mighty Writers has 11 writing centers across the nation where we offer:
free, high quality bilingual writing programs for kids ages 3-17 after school, evenings and weekends.
El Paso is our newest home. Our neighborhood writing center is at 361 Vinton Road, Vinton, TX 79821.
At all our sites, our free programs improve academic performance, address educational inequities and build social-emotional skills so that our students become high school graduates who find joy in self-expression and demonstrate confidence and emotional resilience throughout life.
Our goal is to promote literacy as a tool for social change. We aim to expand students’ access to opportunity in the short term and alleviate poverty in the long term.
Given the challenges our students face, we also utilize mindfulness and social-emotional learning to teach kids to be emotionally resilient, cultivate their inner strength, and foster their overall sense of well-being. Without question, this Mighty Whole Child Approach is what makes the biggest difference in the lives of our Mighty youth.
** Mighty Writers El Paso will teach nearly 200 students through our core programs: **
After-School Academy: A daily program that provides homework help; long-term writing projects and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities that build self-awareness, compassion and resilience.
Mighty Muchachos: Evening class for Latino teens to develop their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
Literary arts workshops: Arts-integrated activities foster creativity and inspiration through music, visual arts, theater, dance, literature and more. We work with other community-based organizations to teach workshops that improve literacy skills while also promoting pride in Latino art, culture and heritage.
One-on-one mentorships: Students are paired with community-based mentors to achieve academic and social-emotional goals.
Mighty Toddlers: The littlest of our Mighty Writers learn to familiarize themselves with words and writing through letter recognition, storytime, book creation and more. Social-Emotional Learning workshops: Trauma-informed workshops help kids effectuate concepts like gratitude, compassion and respect.
Summer camp: Fun and innovative day camps help reduce learning loss during summer months.
SPECIAL INITIATIVE: At the beginning of this year, we brought “Mighty Bags “— filled with books, crayons, comic books, coloring books, fidgets, map puzzles, Nerds candy, stickers and stuffy toys to kids living in temporary shelters.
The purpose is a modest one: to bring some small degree of comfort to children as they move from one unfamiliar place to another.
