Rescue Runners, Inc.
Rescue Runners is a program initiated in El Paso, TX, to recruit volunteers to help run and walk shelter dogs. The shelter environment is a very stressful place, so getting the dogs out for some fun & exercise provides enrichment, and allows for improvement in social skills. The outing also allows the dogs an opportunity to showcase their personality outside of the kennel, which can help promote fostering & adoptions. Thanks to donations from the community, our scope of work has broadened over the last couple years to include Doggy Day Out opportunities for shelter pups, providing supplies for fosters/adopters who open their home to "At Risk" or "longtimer" dogs at the shelter, and spay/neuter assistance for community members who want to be a part of reducing the pet overpopulation issue in our area, but are not financially able to cover the full cost of surgery for their dog. Our organization is completely run by volunteers, so all donations go directly to support animal welfare.

Causes: Advocacy, Animals, Education

Rescue Runners started in 2014 as a way to help homeless dogs cope with the stresses of being in the shelter environment. Shelters traditionally run on limited staff that must focus their time on the primary task of feeding, cleaning & medical care, while enrichment is usually considered a luxury.

The Rescue Runners program aims at filling this void, while also providing the community an easy opportunity to get out to the shelter to volunteer; with the ultimate goal of having these experiences result in adoptions.

Goals & Objectives:

Help ease the stress that dogs in the shelter environment experience.

Improve behavior of the dogs through exercise & socializing.

Encourage fostering & adoptions through more public exposure.

Promote volunteerism & activism from the community.

Advocate for spay/neuter to help reduce pet overpopulation.
