Causes: Arts and Culture, Children and Youth, Education
The Nook Open Book Project was born from a simple belief: books, creativity, and community should be accessible to everyone.
What began as a community-centered bookstore and gathering space grew into a larger vision after we saw firsthand how many children, families, and community members lacked access to books, creative opportunities, and welcoming spaces where they could learn, connect, and belong. Through story times, literacy programs, art activities, book giveaways, and community events, we witnessed the powerful impact that reading and creative expression can have on a person’s confidence, education, and sense of connection.
Founded by former educator and small business owner Mandy Castillo, The Nook Open Book Project combines a passion for literacy, arts education, and community building. Our work focuses on expanding access to books, educational resources, creative experiences, and literacy-focused programming for underserved children and families throughout our region.
We believe literacy is more than learning to read—it is the foundation for opportunity, imagination, self-expression, and lifelong learning. By providing free and low-cost books, creative workshops, community events, and educational initiatives, we help remove barriers that prevent many families from accessing these opportunities.
Today, The Nook Open Book Project serves as a bridge between literacy and community. Through partnerships with local organizations, educators, artists, authors, and volunteers, we create programs that inspire curiosity, celebrate creativity, and foster meaningful connections across generations.
Every book shared, every child reached, and every community event hosted helps us move closer to our vision: a future where every person has access to the stories, resources, and creative opportunities they need to thrive.
Together, we’re opening books, opening minds, and opening doors to possibility.
