Sobreviviendo el Cancer / Surviving Cancer Program

Imagine living on the margin of life while being diagnosed with cancer. There you are - shocked, stunned and listening to what will happen next- knowing you do not have enough money for the intended treatment plan. In that moment, imagine wondering if this is it for you?

UMC is the only not for profit hospital in the region and we do not turn away patients because of an inability to pay. Patients come to University Medical Center (UMC) seeking urgent care due to advanced symptoms of their particular cancer.

The Sobreviviendo El Cancer/Surviving Cancer Program provides short-term financial support for low-income and indigent cancer patients at the Estela Casas Infusion Center for Hope & Healing to help them stay on their treatment plan. Patients who come from other facilities or who are patients of UMC come often without health insurance and a limited financial means to pay for treatment. It is Sobreviviendo’s unyielding goal that not anyone diagnosed with cancer, will never be forced to choose between groceries, rent, or utilities over a treatment plan.

Sobreviviendo el Cancer/Surviving Cancer provides:

  • Assistance with co-pays prescriptions and medical supplies

  • Assistance with co-pays for physician visits/surgery, lab work and imaging

  • Medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen)

  • Transportation to and from medical appointments (bus tokens and lift tickets)

  • Foster care for patients who are homeless with terminal cancer

  • Assistance with utilities, rent and basic needs assistance

Donations are never used for salary, overhead or administration and 100% of the funds stay in our community.

University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso (UMCF) is the designated 501(c) 3 charitable organization for University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC). Our mission is to improve the health, wellness and quality of life for all El Pasoans. To date, UMCF has raised more than $5 million to help support programs, provide equipment and assist UMC in providing the highest quality of care for the El Paso community.
