In 2023, one military family found themselves navigating a season of tremendous change. After her husband enlisted in the Army, a mother moved far from home with their young son. Soon after, her husband was deployed for nine months. Just six days before he left, she learned she was pregnant with their second child.

“I was overwhelmed, isolated, and struggling emotionally,” she shared. “My toddler also withdrew after his dad left.”

Then she found Parents as Teachers and her Parent Educator, Sheila.

“From her very first visit, Sheila brought comfort, encouragement, and joy back into our home.”

Through personalized visits, developmental screenings, resources, and connections with other parents, Sheila became a steady source of support. Her son began to reconnect and, as his mom put it, “become himself again.”

Today, United Way of El Paso County, alongside community partners, helps make Parents as Teachers available at no cost to El Paso families with children from birth through age 5.
