Rebuilding Together El Paso repairs the homes of elderly and/or disabled low-income homeowners. We do this free of charge, with the help of the community to donate money and time. We focus on health and safety in the home. Funds are used for quality-of-life renovations, the purchase and installation of grab bars for bathrooms, repairs to the inside walls, tub to shower conversions, installation of grab bars and ADA toilets, as well as the purchase of a new hot water heater or furnace. We bring out volunteers to paint homes and clean up yards.

Jorge is a disabled senior living in El Paso who relies entirely on a wheelchair for his mobility. Despite his determination to live independently, his home was never designed to accommodate his condition. Narrow doorways prevented him from moving freely between rooms, electrical switches were out of reach, and the bathroom posed daily risks with a traditional bathtub that he could no longer safely use. Simple, everyday activities had become overwhelming challenges. Entering and exiting his home required assistance, limiting his independence and increasing his sense of isolation. The constant risk of falls and injury not only affected his physical safety but also caused significant mental stress and anxiety. Rebuilding Together El Paso is planning a comprehensive intervention to transform Mr. Rodriguez’’s home into a safe, accessible environment. The project includes widening three doorways to allow wheelchair access, relocating electrical switches for ease of use, installing an accessible vanity, converting the bathtub into a walk-in shower, and constructing three ramps to ensure safe entry and exit. These modifications will be life-changing. Mr. Rodriguez will regain the ability to move freely within his home, perform daily activities with dignity, and live with greater independence. Most importantly, the improvements will significantly reduce the risk of injury and restore a sense of safety and peace of mind—turning his house back into a true home.
